The monastery was founded around 1600 but was destroyed in 1923. In 1996, it was converted into a functional monastery.

Since 1977, Almyrida has been a declared area of natural beauty. It boasts two excellent sandy beaches that are shallow and kid-safe. A very narrow, rocky peninsula divides the beaches. They are highly known among lovers of windsurfing and water sports and are extremely well organized. There are pubs along the water there that are well-known for their great local cuisine and nice, fresh seafood.

Since its opening in September 1993, the Historical and Folklore Museum of Gavalochori has served the community of Gavalochori. It is housed in a two-story structure that is a typical example of regional traditional architecture.

The westernmost beach in Georgioupolis, Kalyvaki Beach, is situated west of the town's port at the confluence of the Almyros and Butaka Rivers. Due to the area's springs and rivers, the water is frozen. Since the beach is more sheltered than its neighbors, it is highly structured and a wonderful option for families with young children, especially when it is windy.
